With years of hard work under her green belt, Arnprior’s Madelyn Cazabon is looking forward to competing in the Ontario Winter Games being held in Renfrew County this weekend.
The 10-year-old, Grade 5 student who attends St. Joseph’s Catholic School, spends a lot of time at Sunny Tang Kung Fu Ottawa in Dunrobin, where she has trained in Wushu for the past two years.
“I’m excited that the Winter Games are here in Arnprior,” said Cazabon, so excited in fact she spent four hours on Thursday night volunteering to help set up the competition area.
She says that Wushu is a lot of fun but hard work too.
“It teaches you different ways to defend yourself and it builds your confidence,” she said.
Her love for the sport was born watching her father train in Martial Arts and her mother beams with pride.
“It really impresses me,” said her mother Natalie proudly.
Ontario Winter Games describes Wushu as a form of contemporary Chinese martial arts that blends elements of performance and martial application. Wushu training emphasizes quickness, explosive power, and natural, relaxed movement. The Wushu practitioner must combine flexibility with strength, speed with flawless technique, and fierce intent with effortless execution.
Wushu kicks off at Arnprior District High School (59 Ottawa St., Arnprior) on Friday, then runs from February 10 to 12, and is free for the public to attend.
“I think people will really like watching,” said Cazabon.
