With Canada in the midst of a national mourning period following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the County of Renfrew is providing an opportunity for area residents to pay their respects to the former monarch.
It was announced September 8 that the Queen had passed away peacefully at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She was 96.
A Book of Condolences will be available at the County Administration Building in Pembroke (9 International Drive) until Monday, September 19 for residents to sign during the regular business hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Following the Queen’s funeral on September 19, residents of Renfrew and area will have the opportunity to sign the Book of Condolences at Renfrew County Place (450 O’Brien Road, Renfrew) from Tuesday, September 20 until Thursday, September 22, also from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This will be your last opportunity to sign the book before it is sent to the Royal Family.
Since the Queen’s death was announced, there has been an outpouring of condolences around the world for the only and longest-serving British monarch many have known as a result of Queen Elizabeth II’s historic 70-year reign.
“The Queen’s strength and endurance especially during times of adversity will be her legacy. She was admired by many people in the County of Renfrew, me included,” said Renfrew County Warden Debbie Robinson.
The flags at all County buildings have been lowered to half-mast in honour of the Queen’s passing. In keeping with the Government of Canada’s notice regarding half-masting of the Canadian Flag, however, the Canadian flag was raised on Saturday, September 10 to recognize the accession of King Charles III to the throne. The Canadian flag was lowered again on Sunday, September 11 in recognition of the mourning period for the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
