Back to SearchPembroke: Construction is anticipated to be completed on the Borne Road Bridge (Old Highway 62 Bridge) in Renfrew County the first week of September. Borne Road Bridge (Old Highway 62 Bridge) is located on Borne Road, 2 km north of County Road 58 (Round Lake Road), in the Township of Laurentian Valley and spans the Indian River.
The original bridge was a single span, 13m long, 5m wide, steel girder bridge that supported a single lane of traffic, on Borne Road (Old Highway 62) and was constructed in or near 1923.
As the bridge was nearing the end of its service life, with significant deterioration occurring, a Municipal Class B Environmental Assessment (MCEA) was undertaken in 2019 in order to identify design alternatives for the structure. The subsequent MCEA Report identified three potential alternatives for the structure as follows:
- Replace the existing bridge with a structural plate corrugated steel arch culvert;
- Replace the existing structure with a modular bridge; and
- Close and remove the bridge, with potential construction of turning circles and pedestrian bridge.
In March 2020, the County of Renfrew awarded the Design-Build Services for the Reconstruction of Borne Road Bridge (Old Highway 62 Bridge) to Corington Engineering Incorporated, in partnership with HP Engineering Incorporated. Corington and HP proposed the removal of the superstructure (bridge deck and all supporting elements), rehabilitation of the substructure (abutments and wingwalls), and installation of a new modular bridge deck (supplied by Algonquin Bridges). Detailed design plans and calculations, in conjunction with the proposed reconstruction, were submitted for review and approved by County staff in May of 2020. Construction began in June of 2020. The project will be completed on time and on budget with a final cost of $636,568.00.
