RENFREW COUNTY – County Councillor Glenn Doncaster has once again been elected to the board of directors for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), bringing Renfrew County’s voice to the national forum.
He recently attended the FCM Annual Conference in Regina, Saskatchewan, along with more than 2,000 municipal leaders from across Canada who assembled on a large scale for the first time since 2019. With a theme of Together for Recovery, the conference allowed thousands of municipal leaders to gear up for recovery and focus on building stronger, more inclusive and resilient communities – together.
As a member of the 75-seat board of directors, Councillor Doncaster will help set policy priorities that reflect the concerns of municipal governments and affiliate members from coast to coast to coast.
“After two years of working tirelessly on the frontlines to support Canadians during the pandemic, there’s still much work to do to tackle our country’s greatest challenges, such as the housing crisis and protecting our communities from climate extremes,” he said. “Municipal leaders were loud and clear in Regina – we’re eager to continue working with our federal partners to meet these issues head on, because when our orders of government work together, we move this country forward.”
Councillor Doncaster previously represented Renfrew County on the FCM board of directors in 2018 and from 2019 to 2022 was a member of FCM standing committees, including Community Safety and Crime Prevention and International Relations, as well as the Rural Forum and Ontario Regional Caucus.
He is returning from the FCM conference energized and eager to work with federal and provincial partners to get the job done.
“If we want to get this recovery moving, we need to be in touch with what is happening every day in our communities and make sure that local issues are brought to Ottawa,” he said. “We know that our country’s recovery starts in our communities – where people live, work and raise families and as front-line governments, we understand the challenges people face in their daily lives. That makes us key to Canada’s recovery.”
Renfrew County Warden Debbie Robinson congratulated Councillor Doncaster on his election to the FCM board.
“I am confident Councillor Doncaster will represent Renfrew County well and bring his voice to a number of areas of particular concern to our rural communities,” she said. “He has long been involved with FCM and we are thrilled that he has once again secured a seat on the board of directors.”
Over the four-day conference, the municipal leaders had the opportunity to connect with their federal counterparts through a series of keynote addresses and meetings featuring Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh.
Attendees prepared for the coming recovery through a trade show and numerous workshops focused on crucial municipal issues such as housing affordability and rural growth.
Delegates also passed resolutions calling for national action on four issues reflecting their local community needs: modernizing the Canada Community Building Fund; addressing period poverty in Canada; implementing the calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Committee relating to missing children and unmarked graves; and streamlining support for those fleeing the conflict in Ukraine.
FCM has been the national voice of municipal government since 1901. The members include more than 2,000 municipalities of all sizes, from Canada’s cities and rural communities to northern communities and 20 provincial and territorial municipal associations. Together, they represent more than 90 per cent of all Canadians.
