And Planning for the Ontario Winter Games is Full Steam Ahead!
PEMBROKE: When a call for volunteers was made in February, the County was overwhelmed by the positive response. Over 200 volunteers registered to help within the first few weeks. From that initial list, the County selected a 16-person Local Organizing Committee, representing 8 different communities, and each with a wealth of expertise. Cindy Burwell, a native of Renfrew and resident of Calabogie was hired as the Games Manager to lead the team. Cindy brings over 20 years of event management expertise that she gained both in Canada and Europe. She will work alongside the Games Chair, Peter Emon, County Councillor and Reeve of Renfrew.
“After living in Geneva for 21 years, I am thrilled to come back to Renfrew County and be a part of this fantastic event and work alongside this talented committee,” said Cindy. “Sport has been a significant part of my entire life both personally and professionally. I believe whole-heartedly in the power of sport to uplift, inspire, and motivate young people, while also uniting communities. This is such a great opportunity for Renfrew County and for young athletes from all over Ontario.”
“The committee we have put together is absolutely fantastic,” said Peter Emon. “Collectively we have as our mission to host the best games ever, while show-casing Renfrew County to the rest of Ontario. We see this as an opportunity to unite our region post COVID, and to inspire our young people to think big!”
When Renfrew County announced in December that it had been awarded the Ontario Winter Games for 2022, a collective “hurray” sounded throughout the County! This much anticipated event will be one of the first major sporting events following the COVID-19 pandemic and is expected to be a county wide celebration and bring an economic boost to the region.
About the Games:
The Ontario Winter Games, which began in 1970, are the provinces largest multi-sport winter event. Approximately, 3500 athletes, coaches and managers will descend on the region over two weekends in February and March of 2022. Young athletes aged 12 to20 will participate in 27 different traditional and non-traditional sports, which will take place in sports venues throughout Renfrew County and in the City of Ottawa. The games provide competitive opportunities for these young athletes and future leaders and help prepare them for national and international competition.
The Games will also provide an economic boost to the region as we anticipate an additional 5,000 people will visit the region over the two weekends of competition.
