Pembroke, ON: One of the biggest Algonquin Trail builds by the County of Renfrew will be starting this week! Twenty-one kilometres of the trail, from Renfrew to Cobden, will be graded, packed, and an application of stone dust to make this multi-use trail even more usable by all authorized users. This will complete the Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail/Algonquin Trail from Smiths Falls to just past the Village of Cobden.
The contractor, G.P. Splinter Forest Products of Pembroke who was the successful bidder, plans to start work on Thursday June 24th. The project is expected to last four weeks and the County wants to remind all users to obey and respect all posted signage during this time.
“The importance of trails for all users has never been greater as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. This large improvement to the Algonquin Trail is essential for the tourism and economic development for the region as we transition to post COVID-19 times,” Chair of the Algonquin Trail Advisory Committee, Councillor Bob Sweet.
County staff is reviewing the requirements to open the next section between Cobden and Pembroke with stone dust which could complete the Trail from Smiths Falls to the Town of Petawawa.
The Algonquin Trail is part of the Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail and is owned and managed by the County of Renfrew in Partnership with Lanark County and the Township of Papineau-Cameron.
